Fear & Greed Index

Quantifying market sentiment to find contrarian opportunities

What is the Fear & Greed Index?

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a composite sentiment indicator that scores the market from 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed). It aggregates multiple data sources: price volatility, market momentum, social media volume, dominance metrics, and Google Trends data. The result is a single daily score that captures the emotional temperature of the Bitcoin market.

How to Interpret It

Extreme Fear (0–25) historically represents capitulation — moments where panic selling creates discounted prices. Extreme Greed (75–100) represents euphoria, where FOMO-driven buying inflates prices above fair value. The classic contrarian reading: "be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." Readings at the extremes are statistically meaningful; readings in the neutral range (40–60) carry less signal weight.

Usage Examples

During the 2022 bear market, the index spent weeks in Extreme Fear territory below 10. Investors who accumulated during these periods captured positions near the cycle bottom. In contrast, readings above 85 during the late 2021 peak preceded a -70% drawdown. The F&G Index is best used as a timing tool within an already-bullish macro framework.

Market Context

In the ChainCheck101 signal system, the Fear & Greed Index acts as a sentiment accelerator. When combined with the MA200, a crossover signal that occurs while F&G is below 30 has historically produced the strongest risk/reward setups. The index alone generates too many false signals; its power lies in combination with structural indicators.
